STORYLINE:
Twelve policemen who gathered to help dismantle an apparent decoy bomb near Kirkuk in Iraq were killed by another explosion on Wednesday.
Three others were injured.
Police Brigadier Sarhat Qadir said the explosion occurred 15 kilometres (10 miles) northwest of Kirkuk as a group of police were trying to cordon off the area.
He said officials believed the bomb being dismantled was a decoy to draw in more police before the second bomb exploded.
In Baghdad , a car bomb hit a U-S State Department convoy, damaging two sport utility vehicles and five civilian cars.
The US military refused to say whether there were any casualties, and referred all further questions to U-S Embassy officials.
The car bomb was among four explosions that rocked central Baghdad early on Wednesday.
The military said the second explosion was a car bomb that didn't cause any damage, and the third was a "secondary explosion" nearby, the military said.
No information was given on the fourth explosion.
Thick smoke was seen billowing at the site of the blast.
The blast set at least two civilian cars on fire.
Some of the injured were brought to al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital for treatment.
