The elephant is the strongest animal in the jungle. Despite its huge size, the incredibly powerful creature is very gentle. This is why it is the perfect head to symbolize 'power/strength, yet compassion'. To explain this, Pujya Guruji, Swami Tejomayananda, humorously says, "God has all power, but no desires or problems. We are the opposite, which is why together, we make a perfect match".
Most of us turn to the Lord for we know and want God to have power and be capable of doing anything and everything. In terms of Bhakti aka devotion, we want the Lord to be somebody who is looking after us and capable of solving things and protecting. But, we also want the Lord to be kind enough to hear our prayers and be sensitive to and understand small intricacies. We hope for all of this, knowing that the Higher is not a person and that Ganesha was merely given a beautiful form; knowing that truth or divinity, doesn't have a form. Therefore, his form, signifying the perfect combination of "strength yet compassion', serves as a reminder that what we wish the same in ourselves - a heart that is strong and compassionate. No matter how powerful, always put your all into giving love, serving and living in harmony with all elements and creatures!
