In this one I team up with fellow tunnel instructor and YouTuber @ellie_waterman and attempted to tackle the Welsh 3 peaks challenge, but in under 10 hours! Can we do it? Or are we just bein waaaayyy too optimistic there...?
We started with Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in Snowdonia National Park, and worked our way south through Wales. Our second mountain was Cadair Idris, about 40 miles south of Snowdon. This mountain was by far the hardest one. After that we drove about 87 miles further south to the Brecon Beacons, where we hiked the humble Pen-y-Fan (my local mountain). What made the challenge so much harder was the SH*T weather we had to put up with all day.. being soaking wet and cold, and even getting slammed in the face by hail on Cadair Idris.
SNOWDON (Yr Wyddfa)
For this mountain I'd park at the Pen-y-Pass car park, which needs to be booked in advance (link below). I recommend either taking the Miners track up and the Pyg track down, or Miners track up and down, and use the flat ground for running and making up time.
CADAIR IDRIS
There's 2 approaches you can take with this mountain. You can take the Pony track from the north and the Minffordd track from the south. The Pony track is shorter and faster, however the car park requires you to have to back track a while after the hike.. you could lose about 30 minutes of time getting to and from the car park. The Minffordd track is longer, at about 9km in length. I thought it would be faster to do the latter path, because the car park is located basically on the road you'll need to get you to Pen-y-Fan, and doesn't require backtracking and losing time. The car park is pay & display, and costs £4.
PEN-Y-FAN
This is a humble little mountain, but still the highest in south Wales. on fresh legs this one should only take you about 40 - 60 minutes to the top. It's one path that literally just goes straight up, no winding or anything, just makes a B-line for the summit. Park at the Storey Arms car park near the iconic red phone box. The red phone box indicates the start of the hike. Parking is currently free, however I've read online that they are charging now, but this wasn't the case with us on the day we did the challenge.
Ellie has done a vlog which she's split into 2 videos, of the whole trip through Wales.. it's a completely different approach to my video, so it's worth checking out just to see the adventures we got up to and even some behind the scenes style footage of this video.
