I compare two PV23 (dioxazine violet) based tube-watercolours from Winsor and Newton - Cotman (student grade) and Professional (artist grade). Cotman 231 "Dioxazine Purple" and Professional 733 "Winsor Violet (Dioxazine)". Both are single-pigment colours that use PV23 (Dioxazine Violet). I compare pigment load, consistency, vibrancy, cost and how well they mix with Professional 108 "Cadmium Yellow" (PY35 and PO20) to form a brown/grey.
Overall, Professional obviously wins as far as I'm concerned, so if you can afford a few pounds more, buy it! So little paint is needed for the same pigment load that it's actually going to save you money longer term - the cheaper paint will run out far, far faster! That said, Cotman is a very good student grade paint (see Episode 1) and perfectly serviceable.
