Katra, Jammu & Kashmir: A 72-hour shutdown commenced on Wednesday, led by pony wallahs, shopkeepers, and other local stakeholders, to protest against the proposed ropeway project aimed at facilitating access to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Sangharsh Samiti called for the complete suspension of all activities in Katra during the bandh, causing inconvenience to pilgrims visiting the shrine. While some expressed support for the ropeway, concerns were raised about the impact on local livelihoods. Last month, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board announced plans for the Rs 250-crore project to connect Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, aiming to ease access for senior citizens, children, and others unable to undertake the 13-km trek to the cave shrine.
