Five Afghan soldiers were killed in an air strike in the Charkh district of the eastern Logar province early Thursday morning (March 6).
The bomb struck a military outpost around 3:30 a.m., killing five members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and injuring 17 others, including eight other Afghan soldiers.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed the incident, citing it as an accident.
"An investigation is being conducted at this time to determine the circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident," ISAF said in a statement. "We value the strong relationship with our Afghan partners, and we will determine what actions will be taken to ensure incidents like this do not happen again."
District governor Khalilullah Kamal visited the scene, saying that the strike was carried out by a drone.
"The post is totaly destroyed," Kamal said in an AFP report. "The Americans used to be in that post, but since they left the ANA took over."
Foreign troops are expected to withdraw from Afghanistan at the end of the year as President Hamid Karzai has refused to sign an agreement that would allow a reduced number of foreign troops remain.
