In the middle of a quiet Wednesday morning, the 11-kilometer / 7 miles tunnel linking the French town of Chamonix and the Italian town of Courmayeur burst into flames. Within minutes, a truck fire spread through the tunnel, creating a deadly trap for everyone inside. A total of 39 people died from the intense heat and dense toxic smog.
