Researchers in China are exploring a sinkhole in Yunnan province to collect rare seeds and plant specimens. Because of its isolation and unique structure, the sinkhole provides an ideal shelter for plants and animals. Species that have not been seen for over a century and other remarkable plants have survived in the area. One of the most exciting finds from the researchers’ trek was the Whytockia chiritiflora, which was last recorded by a British botanist in 1893. Their expedition could play an important role in preserving endangered species as they plan to explore other larger sinkholes in the region.
