The ruin of Liptov castle.
It is situated in district Liptovský Mikuláš near Kalameny and Bukovina.
The ruins of the former castle stand on the hill Sestrč (999 meters above the sea) in Chočské vrchy.
It was the highest located castle in Slovakia and one of the highest situated in Central Europe.
The castle was first mentioned in 1262.
It had a defensive function. It has been destroyed several times. Since it was built, it went through the hands of various monarchs. After the castle was recharged by the royal army, it was destroyed.
Since the 1980s, the castle was the subject of medieval archeology research and its foundations were reconstructed and preserved.
The whole area of the castle is open to the public. There is a red-marked and a yellow-marked hiking trail.
My group visited the castle as exercise expedition of DofE. We struggled to get our dog up the ladder, but it was worth it.
There are amazing views, the history of the castle is really well served. Also, you can play a table game!
The hiking is really easy, even for children. Near the castle is also a lake with warm mineral water. But don't get fooled by deceptive signs!
