"Udatsu" refers to the roof decoration found in old Japanese buildings. Originally, it was installed on the roof as a firewall to prevent fires from spreading from neighboring houses, but at some point wealthy people began to add extravagant decorations to their udatsu.
In Japan, people who are not commercially successful are called 'people who do not raise udatsu', and this is derived from this udatsu. In other words, for Japanese people in the past, a house with an udatsu was a symbol of wealth and proof of success.
In Wakimachi, a corner of Mima City, there are many houses with udatsu. Nowadays, few people know the origin of udatsu, but the beautiful townscape still impresses many people.
