At 12.51 pm on Tuesday 22 February a 6.3 earthquake struck close to the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. The quake was centered in the Port Hills on a previously unknown fault. The rapid release of the energy gave the equivalent shaking of a magnitude 9. This resulted in many buildings being severely damaged two of which collapsed. It is likely that the official death toll from the quake will be 182. Because this quake was triggered by the 7.1 Darfield quake which occurred at 4.35 am on 4 September 2010, it was considered to be an aftershock. Friday March 18 was declared Memorial Day and a service was held in North Hagley Park. This is a clip from that service.
