Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto is celebrating a declared victory in the presidential election as unofficial vote counts indicate a significant lead. The 72-year-old former special forces commander, who previously ran for president twice, secured about 58 percent of the votes according to four pollsters conducting "quick count" ballots at sampled voting stations nationwide, with counts ranging from 86 to 95 percent as of Wednesday, 14:00 GMT.
Rivals Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo trailed with about 25 percent and 17 percent, respectively, according to independent pollsters that have accurately reflected past election results since direct voting began in 2004. A slower preliminary count by the election commission showed Prabowo with 57.7 percent of votes with about 6 percent of ballots recorded.
Prabowo addressed his jubilant supporters in Jakarta, expressing gratitude for the quick results and emphasizing humility in victory. His running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of outgoing President Joko Widodo, joined him at the stadium.
