Edvard Munch kept almost 400 square meters of paintings on rolls. Most of these have never been seen by the public.
The majority of the paintings kept on rolls are work drafts Munch painted for various decoration assignments. As soon as he finished, he rolled up the remaining drafts on rolls, often six to seven on each.
When Munch’s drafts were rolled out in 2006, their condition was terrible. There were creases, folds, tares and a lot of loose paint. They underwent preservation and were rolled back up. Join us as we unroll them again, to see how they have endured the storage.
