About This Episode:
At the end of Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue in central Windhoek, in front of the railway station, is a memorial that has greater significance than initially meets the eye.

The stone obelisk was erected in 1919 in memory of the South African soldiers who died in action against the Kwanyama king, Mandume Ya Ndemufayo, on 6 February 1917. The grassy memorial was also once known as the ‘Garden of Remembrance’. Twelve palm trees, planted for each of the fallen soldiers, surround the obelisk.
It is an important site for the Owambo, who believe that the king’s head is buried at the site. Mandume lost his life in the battle; either caught in a crossfire or, as Kwanyama oral tradition holds, he committed suicide.
The centenary commemoration of his death takes place this weekend at Omhedi in the Ohangwena Region and culminates in Oihole, southern Angola. Dignitaries will include Namibian president Hage Geingob and former presidents Hifikepunye Pohamba and Sam Nujoma.
