To fly advanced FSX/MCE simulator aircraft well, a refresher check ride is frequently needed. Here the PMDG Jetstream gets an little outing. Well any excuse to fly this beauty really!
We pick up the flight on route to the Isle of Man (in the old Manx livery). About to cross WAL and descend through an ATC crossing restriction..
The Altsel command is demonstrated. This is automatically selected by the MCE first officer, after she sets the requested altitude. A clever MCE supported feature and implemented well. Verbal Altitude Select is also possible and requires monitoring. With no VNav available on the Jetstream, this command is the Altitude Intervene equivalent seen on the typical FMC's. Thanks to Ben at MCE this aircraft has 100% authentic first officer support.
To all those who aspire to a high degree of professionalism in their sim flying, don't forget that the J41 has a 543 page Aircraft Operating Manual (PMDG). This manual permits you to fly this superb aircraft by the book, if you care to that is!
The J41 is not easy to fly. Probably why the average casual simmer didn't like it too much;) There is no FMC, (Flying minus consciousness!). The Honeywell flight manager is not immediately intuitive! Another characteristic of the aircraft is that it does not decelerate easily, hence the AOM states full landing configuration is to be achieved at FAF, especially if visibility is minimums. Also, upon landing, the spoilers do not deploy unless ground idle is selected on throttle!
You must practise and go through the learning curve, as in the real world! You cant just jump in and fly well. I hope my videos here help to show some of its wonderful features. MCE provides all the scope to add perfect flows as per AOM and all the accurate checklists, by the book.
For those who are curious, the shutdown flow seen here, is how MCE can be used to permit a variation to the flow. Here the no 2 (Starboard) is shut down first, permitting the techs to connect the GPU, then after the power is switched to GPU, the no 1 engine (port) is shut down. Radar Contact v4 provides ATC, with FO handling the radio and local traffic are also flying with WAL on their flight plan!
