I had spent my time in Yerevan so far exploring the city's incredible architecture and visiting its oldest district of Kond. In this vlog, I head to the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex to learn about the country's tragic history.

Over the years, Armenia has been caught between numerous empires. In the late 19th century, Western Armenia was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. As Christians, Armenians faced much discrimination.

Ethnic Turks began to believe that Armenians were over-represented in higher society and held too much power in occupations such as bankers, merchants, and bureaucrats, much like the German propaganda that led to the persecution and near annihilation of Europe's Jews. Armenians were likened to parasites and thieves.

Violence and persecution towards the Armenian people became more common throughout the late 19th century and WWI gave the Young Turks the opportunity to finally implement the genocide of the Armenian people that had been planned since 1911.

It is estimated that between 600,000 and 1.5 million people died during the Armenian Genocide. The Turkish government has consisently denied or taken responsibility for the mass deportations and genocide carried out against Armenians in their homeland.
