The tennis forehand is a shot everyone loves to hit and as the modern game has developed, the inside out tennis forehand has become a popular weapon for many.

Interestingly the inside in tennis forehand has often been underutilized, but I want you to consider hitting it more often as long as the footwork is correct.

This is a shot that all the top pros use throughout their matches including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.

Having a big tennis forehand is a key component to developing a dominating weapon on that side, especially if you can hit it inside out and inside in.

Federer does a great job of using both forehands and is able to disguise it by using the same footwork regardless of the direction he goes with the shot.

So let's get clear on the inside in footwork.

One of the best ways to hit this shot is to move out to the ball and set up in a semi open stance. This will allow you to find the ball and measure it with your feet and body. Plus, it will give you the proper spacing.

Once you establish your semi open stance, load the outside leg and as while preparing to hit the ball you will shift your weight to the front foot.

It's very important to make sure you get your weight on the front foot so you can feel your weight going into the shot.




You can even hop a little off the ground as you hit the ball. This extra push off the ground into the air allows you to create more space, hit the ball with more power and feel dynamic balance as you hit the ball.

This is a common footwork pattern that Federer uses on his inside in forehand.

Next time you are out on the court and run around your backhand, use the semi open stance on your inside in tennis forehand. Get your wright on your front foot and push off the front leg as you hit the ball.
