TikTok’s hold on the political class has been complicated by its political position—owned by the Chinese company ByteDance Ltd., it’s become a focus of US suspicions about any technology with a connection to China. Perhaps as a result, Porter is the relatively rare politician to fully embrace the app.
Most political advertising still takes place through traditional channels, but digital’s share is growing, in part, because campaigns see it as a good way to reach young people. Voters under 30 have been an important part of the Democrats’ success in recent elections, and there are signs that fewer are planning to vote in 2024 than did four years ago.
