Before her execution on October 16, 1793, former Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, found herself facing the guillotine. At the moment leading to her death sentence, she accidentally stepped on the foot of her executioner, Charles-Henri Sanson. Suddenly addressing him, she uttered the historic words, 'Pardon me, monsieur. I did not do it on purpose.' These words, full of humanity and unexpectedness in such a moment, became the last spoken by Marie Antoinette before the sentence of death was carried out.
