China-made bullet trains with a top speed of 350km/h (217mph) have been exported for the first time in a shipment to Indonesia for use on a new high-speed rail line. The engines and carriages left China’s eastern port city of Qingdao on August 21, 2022, and are expected to arrive later in the month for deployment on the railway connecting the Indonesian capital Jakarta to Bandung in West Java. The line projected to be ready by June 2023 will reportedly cut the travel time between the two cities from nearly three hours to about 40 minutes. The railway is a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing's trade initiative to link economies into a China-centred trading network. China has bankrolled most of the US$7.9 billion cost of the project.
