To crochet even stitches, you need to control your tension. But what does that mean? Let me break it down for you so that you get this a lot faster than I did as a beginner. Here are 2 things to remember:
1. Tension is how tight or loose you pull on your working yarn. (The yarn coming over your finger). It also refers to how tight you crochet your stitches. By controlling how hard you pull on your working yarn (or how much slack you give it), you control how tight or loose your stitches are. So, by keeping your tension even, you keep your loops even and thus your stitches even.
2. The MOST IMPORTANT point at which you need to be mindful of how hard you pull on your working yarn is BEFORE you start your stitch. That 1st loop that's on your hook will become the top of your stitch, so that's the loop you want to make sure isn't too tight or too loose. That determines to a large extent how tight your stitch will be.
Hope that helps! Save and share with a fellow crocheter. Ask your questions in the comments, I'll do my best to answer them.
