When beekeepers need more queens, they have different ways of making new queens. One way is to graft young larvae into queen cups. Because these queen cups are larger than drone comb and worker bee cells, the bees know to feed these cells exclusively royal jelly. You must take very young larvae (1-3 days old) into these queen cups and put into a hive without a queen. The worker bees will continue to feed the larvae royal jelly until it is time to cap the queen cell, then they will fill the remainder of the cell with royal jelly. The pupae then forms into a queen, and will emerge 7-9 days later.
