Kunstresidenz Sommer.Frische.Kunst Bad Gastein is an Artist-In-Residence program that invites artists to create new work in Bad Gastein, a town in the mountains near Salzburg (Austria). Bad Gastein is a quite unique place to produce art. On the one hand the topography of the city is unique, more vertical than horizontal, dominated by historic multi-story hotel buildings and a waterfall that runs right through the center or the city. And as if this wasn’t enough, there’s also a 70s style Congress Center that looks like a UFO. On the other hand Bad Gastein has a rich history. In the 19th century Bad Gastein became a fashionable resort that was visited by the rich and famous. Today, Bad Gastein offers a rather morbid charm, with many hotels and the Congress Center in the town center vacant. No wonder that many artists get inspired by the unique aura of the place.
On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition that presents the results of the work of the eight artists of this year’s Artist-In-Residence program, we had a look at the show and spoke to some of the artists. We also met with the curator of the program, Andrea von Goetz und Schwanenfliess, who provided us with a look back at 4 years of the Sommer.Frische.Kunst Artist-In-Residence program and an outlook to next year’s anniversary. This year’s artists in residence are Aiko Tezuka, Dirk Meinzer, Franziska Pierwoss, Siska, Michael Conrads, Nick Oberthaler, Stefan Panhans, and Susanne Stroh.
