25 year old Yorkshireman Ibbotson had already come within half a second of John Landy's mile WR the previous month and here made no mistakes ,knocking the best part of a second off the old mark to record 3.57.2 .Running here at the old White City Stadium in London in an Invitational Mile during a London v New York meet ,Ibbotson dragged both Olympic champion Delaney of Ireland and Jungwirth of Czechoslovakia to new National Records.His new record stood for less than a year and Ibbotson,sadly, never showed this kind of form again.
