USA SPEEDSKATING
Women's speedskating world championship. Karin Kania wins for East Germany. This was her tenth world record.
East Germany's Karin Kania won the women's speedskating world championship title at Milwaukee in Wisconsin on the weekend, overcoming a late challenge from her compatriot Andrea Ehrig in the final event on Sunday (8/2). Ehrig, who took the silver medal, needed to beat Kania by about 9 and a half seconds in the 5,000 metres to win the title, but could only clock 7 minutes 49.96, while Kania was some four seconds adrift in 7.50.15. Third place overall went to the Dutch competitor Yvonne Vangennip.
Karin Kania built an impressive lead on Saturday (7/2). She won the 500 metres and finished second to Ehrig over 3,000 metres. She continued her bid for the title with victory in the 1500 metres on Sunday, and Ehrig's challenge came too late.
