To the leadership of the organization,
I am deeply concerned about the future of Miss Universe, the recent statements made by the leadership of this organization demonstrate a lack of genuine interest in empowering women and championing diversity. Boldly declaring “blonde and blue eyes is the ultimate evolution” is incredibly insensitive, disrespectful and damaging to the women involved in the pageant. It sends the message that women that do not meet the standard of your “ultimate evolution” are of less value than those who do. This belittles the efforts of the women in your own organization that you claim to uplift. These statements are disgraceful and denigrate the women associated with the organization. It is clear that the leadership is unfit and do not meet the standards needed to manage the organization with transparency and integrity. The new leadership has continually shown that they are not committed to uplifting and inspiring women but rather profiting off of their efforts, stories and the money of their national organizations.
In the words of Paula Shugart:
“There is a critical difference between declaring the words transformational leadership and being a real transformational leader. Transformational leadership is not about one person. It can and it must be about putting the needs of the team above all else and creating a vision for the future. It can and it must be empathetic, beyond self-interest. It can and it must be committed to building confidence through inspiration and teamwork and not insecurity and chaos. It can and it must be about motivation not denigration. And above all it must be about honesty, respect, integrity and living by your word. One cannot just talk the talk; one must walk the walk.”
The new leadership is more concerned with their own self-interests than with the needs of the team and title holders. They lack vision and have only tainted the reputation of the organization. They are not committed to building teamwork; they discarded loyal pageant organizers in favor of more profits and have eliminated the people that made the organization great. The new leadership has never demonstrated honesty, respect or integrity. The only words they’ve lived by are the ones that were leaking in the video stating that married women and mothers could compete but not win.
The fans of Miss Universe please implore the leadership of the Miss Universe organization to step down. At present you risk losing all credibility.
