Pope Francis met with Congolese and South Sudanese refugees at Centro Astalli in Italy before departing on his first international trip of 2023. On his way to the airport, he also prayed at a monument honoring Italian airmen who died on a peace mission in the Congo in 1961. Despite ongoing knee pain, the Pope boarded the plane and asked for prayers for those who died crossing the Sahara and for those imprisoned in Mediterranean camps. Upon arriving in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he was welcomed by two children with flowers before meeting with various delegations and holding a private meeting with Prime Minister Sama Lukonde.
