When people have a problem sleeping it could be due to a variety of factors including metabolic issues, cortisol issues, neurotransmitter issues, as well as commonly the autonomic nervous system issue in the setting of adrenal fatigue. Now metabolic imbalances, meaning blood sugar irregularities, during sleep in the middle of the night is often a sign and a frequent occurrence in adrenal fatigue.

This is Dr. Lam, founder of drlam.com. And today’s topic is sleep series metabolic factors. Now trace minerals such as chromium and manganese and zinc can be stabilizing for the body but also can make the sleep worse because of a stimulatory effect. At the same time, nuts at bedtime for example can be helpful.
Now why is it so? Now metabolic imbalances, meaning blood sugar irregularities, during sleep in the middle of the night is often a sign and a frequent occurrence in adrenal fatigue. When the blood sugar is low, or near low, or sometime can even be normal but on a reactive basis, then the body can wake up. Because the senses of the body is that it needs metabolic regulation. So when this happens a person will wake up in the middle of the night, sometimes being hungry, sometimes having night sweats. So having more fat in the body and protein such as that derived from nuts at bedtime can be helpful because it regulates the sugar and stabilize it.
Chromium also has a blood sugar stabilizing effect, and can be also helpful for those people with sleep maintenance insomnia. The problem comes is, how do you know how much to use and when to use? And the reason is because for those people, especially with advanced adrenal fatigue, the body can be quite sensitive. So these compounds, even though they can have metabolic stabilizing effect, can generate what we call paradoxical reactions and exaggerate responses. So sometimes, for example, chromium may in the normal people stabilize the blood sugar, but in those with adrenal fatigue may actually cause the blood sugar to go down more than it is comfortable. So likewise the reaction of some of these other compounds, including trace minerals, can be also problematic.
So if you suspect you have metabolic issues it is imperative that you see somebody who really understands how the metabolic cycle, the neurotransmitters, the sympathetic system, all play into the insomnia cycle. And have a program to be able to address each of these carefully so you don't get backfiring and get worse over time.
