"The Shubenacadie Indian Residential School" (a.k.a.: "Shubie" & "St. Anne's Convent"), operated as part of the Canadian Indian residential school system, in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, between 1929 and 1967. It was the only one in the Maritimes and children from various Mi'Kmaq, Maliseet, Abenaki and other Indigenous Peoples across the region were forcefully placed in this institution. The school was funded by the Canadian government,through Indian Affairs and the Catholic Church. Over 1000 Indigenous children are estimated to have been placed in Shubenacadie Indian Residential School, over 37 years. Numerous Mi’kmaq children who attended Shubenacadie Indian Residential School gave many reports of the school's staff using severe corporal punishment during the first two decades of the institutions’ existence. The first principal, allegedly knocked out a fifteen-year-old, in front of a class, by punching him in the face. Many Mi’kmaq survivors who attended Shubenacadie Indian Residential School reported being sexually abused, by various staff members. One Mi’kmaq person told, that his sister died within 24 hours, after being assaulted by the staff. In June 1934, 19 boys were severely beaten by the principal, for stealing, which was supported by the Halifax Chronicle. There were also many testimonies given, of the school's staff locking children in small storage rooms, for days at a time.
