The Lady and the Highwayman is a 1989 British romantic adventure television film adapted from Barbara Cartland's 1952 romance novel, Cupid Rides Pillion. The project originally carried the working title Dangerous Love.
The film features Hugh Grant in one of his early roles as the dashing highwayman Silver Blade and Lysette Anthony as Lady Panthea Vyne. Set during the Restoration of Charles II, the story is a swashbuckling blend of romance, jealousy, and betrayal. Michael York portrays King Charles II, with Emma Samms as Lady Castlemaine and Oliver Reed among the supporting cast. Notable guest appearances include Robert Morley and John Mills.
The character of Lady Castlemaine, whose vendetta against Lady Panthea forms a key part of the plot, is inspired by Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland—a prominent mistress of King Charles II and mother to several of his children.
