One day, while hunting in the forest, Kannappa found a Shivalinga. He immediately fell in love with the Linga and started worshiping it daily. He used to bring water from the river and bathe the linga, offering flowers and fruits from the forest.
One day, Kannappa noticed that one of Lingam's eyes was bleeding. He was heartbroken, offering one of his eyes to Linga immediately. When Lingam's other eye started bleeding, Kannappa was about to remove his other eye as well. But Shiva appeared before him and stopped him.
Lord Shiva was pleased with Kannappa's true devotion and selfless love. He restored Kannappa's eyes and conferred on him the title Nayanar. Kannappa Nayanar is worshiped as one of the greatest devotees of Lord Shiva.
The story of Bhakta Kannappa Nayanar teaches us that true devotion is not about rituals or ceremonies, but about pure love and surrender. It also teaches us that Lord Shiva is always with his devotees, whether they are laymen or educated.
