Webinar Description: Outreach has often been the principle mechanism by which the battered women's movement has raised public awareness. Yet reaching out and working in partnership with local underserved communities has been challenging for many in the movement to end domestic violence. The webinar will examine the history of the evolution of outreach and the particular ways in which it was handled when working with underserved communities. Following a clarification of terms, the presentation will outline why it is not only important to reach out but also build collaborative partnerships so that there is community ownership in ending domestic violence. Using various examples, Sujata will outline both successful and unsuccessful methods and suggest some was to overcome challenges.
Trainer Bio: Sujata Warrier, Ph.D. is the Director of Training and TA at the Battered Women's Justice Project. Prior to this position, she was the Director of Community Response Policy and Training of the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence. She continues to train and provide technical assistance to professionals in various systems such as health care, law enforcement, criminal and civil justice and human and social services on the issue of domestic violence. Additionally, she provides assistance on legislative and policy issues on battered immigrant women. She has also trained extensively at the local, state, national and international levels on the issue of cultural competency for various professionals and has delivered numerous keynotes on the issue of culture, competency, relativeism, domestic and sexual violence and violence against women. She received her Ph.D. from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. She has written and published numerous articles on violence against women in the international context.
