STORYLINE:
Italian taxi drivers took to the streets of Rome on Wednesday to protest the Italian government's possible opening to multinational companies in the public transportation sector.
The protesters urged the government to change article 10 of the draft bill on market liberalization, which is currently discussed at the Italian Parliament and which they consider disadvantageous.
Rage among the taxi drivers mounted as an international conglomerate of investigative journalists, including The Guardian, revealed Uber executives and their lobbyists allegedly pressured European governments between 2014 and 2016.
Hundreds of drivers gathered in front of the Italian Government Office, Chigi Palace, and some of them shouted slogans against Prime Minister Mario Draghi and threw some firecrackers in the streets.
Police cordoned off the area around the government office and blocked the protesters.
A few demonstrators and some unionists managed to reach the governmental palace and organized a symbolic sit-in, chaining themselves to the fence in front of the building.
"We don't want to either leave our customers in the hands of the algorithms and also leave our workers jobless," said Riccardo Cacchione, coordinator of the taxi drivers union USB, referring to Uber, as he continued to protest chained to the fence.
