A powerful earthquake centered near the resort of Huatulco appeared to have killed at least one person in southern Mexico, swayed buildings in Mexico City and sent thousands running into the streets.
Oaxaca state Governor Alejandro Murat told the Televisa network that he had a preliminary report of one person killed and one injured in a building collapse near the epicenter.
Otherwise most reports were of minor damage.
Footage from Mexico City showed police patrolling the streets with some areas cordoned off due to the damage.
The US Geologic Survey said the magnitude 7.4 quake hit at 10:29 a.m. near Mexico's southern Pacific coast at a depth of 16 miles (26 km).
