With Eid al-Adha nearing, Algerians make their annual visit to Bou Saada town to procure Bou Saadi knives forged by Abderrahmane Douffi, an 85-year-old master blacksmith whose blades are renowned for their quality.
Douffi, believed to be one of the last authentic knifemakers in the town, carries a generation-old legacy. He learnt the craft from his father and uncles since he was eight, he said as he hammered molten steel into shape using traditional methods passed down over centuries.
Forged from pure steel, Bou Saadi knives are known to be durable and sharp, making them a go-to multi-purpose tool for sacrificing livestock, shaving, or even aiding revolutionaries in the past.
"It is a heritage of our town," local artisan and owner of a craft shop in Bou Saada, Amar Touama, said.
Eid al-Adha, one of Islam's two main festivals, marks the climax of the annual haj pilgrimage, when Muslims slaughter animals - to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son on God’s command - often distributing meat to the poor. — Report from Reuters
