Amazing flying over a 2 day trip flying about 85km both days starting from Coronet Peak in Queenstown with Nico, camping on Mt Shrimpton in Makarora and then finally ending up at Mt Cook!
Landed early the first day as the strong southerly winds were eventually catching us up, I landed near Mt Shimpton and Nico landed on Mt Cross opposite Mt Brewster. The second day was the most magic day flying over spectacular scenery, a route I've dreamed of flying for several years. The flying conditions where absolutely textbook, it was full on thermic flying around bigger mountains up to 9500ft. Once I got up on the Ben Ohaus I crossed so I was sure to land by the road, big day at work the next day and I felt I had already pushed my luck. There was still at least 3 hours of flying left in the day when I landed but played it safe, will have to save it for next time. Can't wait to go back.
For those wanting to fly in the Mount Cook area, you are required to use an Airband Radio and have relevant licence. It's a mandatory broadcast zone due to high traffic levels. You can find more info on the NZHGPA website www.nzhgpa.org.nz
