Contrary to popular belief Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of fleet street, really did exist!
186 Fleet Street, London, was the address of his famous barber shop where he had a chair which tilted back and sent people into the basement. Some say he slit their throats whilst shaving them and some say they were sent off to his girlfriend's pie shop to be made into pies!
Born in Brick Lane, Sweeney Todd did a stretch at Newgate prison where he had a job in the prison barbers. On his release he opened a string of barber shops, the most famous of which was the one in Fleet Street.
He continued his gruesome trade for some time stealing the personal effects of his victims but in those days even seeing body parts, or false teeth in jars wouldn't have been out of place in a barber's shop window as they offered services like wart removal and other treatments which they wished to advertise.
Sweeney Todd aroused the suspicions of the judiciary finally when the smell of rotten flesh pervaded the church above the tunnel in which some body parts were left. The shop was watched and a man went in but didn't come out so when the police investigated they discovered the clothes of 160 victims and wondered whose they were.
They then discovered a tunnel leading to his lover's pie shop but it was never proved whether she (Margery Lovett) turned them into pies on not.
Sweeney Todd was executed in 1802.
