How To Merge Layers in Illustrator (2025 Tutorial)

In this video I will show you step by step how to merge layers in Adobe Illustrator. Layering or flatten layers in Illustrator is super easy to do and is something any beginner should quickly learn to do.

There are several ways to merge layers in Illustrator:

To merge two or more layers together: Select the layers that you want to merge, and then click the Merge Selected button in the Layers panel.
To merge all layers in a document: Click the Merge All button in the Layers panel.
To merge layers with specific properties: Hold down the Alt key while clicking the Merge Selected button, and then select the Merge Layers with Same Properties option.
To merge layers non-destructively: Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking the Merge Selected button. This will create a new layer that contains the merged artwork, without altering the original layers.
