—How to Leverage Strengths as a Leader—
There’s a new way to farm today. It’s called precision agriculture.
What precision agriculture does is break a farmer’s field into a series of small squares, like a sheet of graph paper. It then takes soil samples from each square, tests the samples, and puts the results of those tests into a computer.
That computer then uploads the data to a satellite that downloads it to a tractor with a fancy computer attached that adjusts soil amendments in real time to the exact specifications to each square’s needs.
What in the world does this have to do with sales leadership? Plenty as you’ll soon see.
Hello, I’m Bill Zipp and I help sales leaders achieve long-term success with a people-centered approach to performance. This is video four in a seven-part series on how to develop self leadership.
What the pioneers of precision agriculture envisioned is that poorer soils would become more productive, rising to the productivity levels of better soils.
But that’s not what happened.
Yes, poorer soils got a little better, but the greatest gains were made by good soils being given exactly what they needed to thrive. As a result, their output increased two, three, and in some cases four-fold.
Here’s where you come in. The fourth skill of self leadership is leveraging your strengths.
You can spend tons of time fixing your weaknesses and get a little better at some things. Or you can invest in your strengths, increasing your productivity two, three, and four-fold.
Here’s how to leverage strengths as a leader:
1. Look
Look in the mirror. What do you see there? Who are you at your very best? How do you build relationships? How do you solve problems? How do you motivate others? The intersection of those lines identifies the leadership strengths that are unique to you.
2. Leverage
Now use the strengths you uniquely possess. Work on them. Refine them. Stephen King didn’t wake up one day magically possessed with the power to write the creepiest stories on the face of earth. He perfected that craft over time and leveraged it to become one of the bestselling authors ever. Your leadership voice requires the same… Just don’t be creepy!
3. Look, Leverage, and Get a Little Better
Finally, what do you do about your weaknesses? Remember, precision agriculture made poorer soils a little better. And that’s what you’ll need to do in certain areas. But only in those areas that are mission critical.
If improving a weaknesses does not contribute to increasing job performance in a meaningful way, let it go. None of us can be all things to all people, so stop trying.
In my next video on how to develop self leadership, we’ll explore the fifth self leadership skill: morning habits that will change your life.
