Iraqi forces have broken through the defense lines of the so-called Islamic State in an eastern suburb of Mosul.
The breakthrough come some two weeks after they began their offensive.
A commander says Iraqi troops are now fighting in an industrial zone on the eastern outskirts of the city.
Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi warned that ISIS fighters holed up in Mosul will either have to die or surrender.
The fighting is still expected to be difficult as the city is still home to one-and-a-half million residents.
Almost 18-thousand residents have fled so far and, according to the UN's worst-case scenario, as many as 700-thousand others could follow suit.
This is the largest military operation in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.
