The Chowilla Floodplain spans the SA/VIC border on the River Murray and is an Icon Site under The Living Murray program in the Murray-Darling Basin. The Floodplain contains the largest remaining natural river red gum forest in the Lower Murray and a range of diverse aquatic habitats.
Delivery of water for the environment on the Chowilla Floodplain provides feeding and breeding habitat for birds and amphibians, and enables the movement of carbon and nutrients from the floodplain to the River to support foodwebs. The water provides improved soil moisture conditions within creek banks and across wetlands and floodplains, improving tree and understorey condition and supporting regeneration of floodplain vegetation. Please enjoy this video about how the floodplain responds when it receives water for the environment.
