We were heading north in order to make the most of the last of summer, and stopped for a few days in Chandigarh on the way into the hills.
Chandigarh is one of India's only planned cities, with lots of gardens, and pedestrian friendly sectors laid out in a rigid grid. It is a curious place, and in addition to getting bus tickets (eventually) we visited the rose garden and two museums. The undisputed highlight of Chandigarh is Nek Chand's surreal rock garden, with hundreds of strange sculptures and a maze of rocks created from the remains of the original villages.
Chandigarh isn't high on tourist's places to visit, but it made a nice break from travelling and certainly had a few interesting attractions.

Al, from New Zealand and Kel from Australia met through work in 2010 and have been together ever since. Always infected by the travel bug they finally decided to head off on an adventure and started with Vietnam and Laos before heading to Sri Lanka, India, then Cambodia and Indonesia. Their mission is to explore as many off the beaten track places as possible through a slow travel philosophy on a tight budget.
