At its dedication, Link Hall was the largest building on campus prior to the completion of Bird Library. The 2000 renovation created a new suite of state-of-the-art laboratories for environmental research on the fourth floor.
A chemistry building had been needed for years since the Department of Chemistry outgrew its cramped quarters in the basement of the Hall of Languages. According to newspaper accounts of the time, constructing Bowne required considerable stripping of the foot of Mt. Olympus, which accounts for the shape of the building.
The Shaffer Art Building was built to house the two-dimensional arts, including Advertising Design, Communication Design, Computer Graphics, Drawing and Painting, Fashion Illustration, Film the Freshman Foundation Program, Museum Studies, Photography, and Video. It was constructed with studio space for students and instructors, a 60-seat lecture hall, a 300-seat auditorium, and several combination lounge/gallery areas and faculty offices.
