Thousands of students marched in the streets of Algeria's capital on Tuesday, May 21, calling for the resignations of interim president Abdelkader Bensalah and Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui who was appointed by Abdelaziz Bouteflika days before he stepped down.
Waving a giant Algerian flag and holding placards, the young protesters chanted slogans demanding free and fair elections.
Algeria's armed forces chief, Lieutenant-General Ahmed Gaed Sala, said on Monday (May 20) that elections were the best way to overcome the country's political crisis and avoid a constitutional vacuum. He also called for more speed in forming a committee to supervise the election, without mentioning a date for the vote.
