Science communicator Huw James shows us how easy it is to make some pretty cool smoke vortexes.
IMPORTANT: You will need one sober adult with a sense of scientific wonder...
What you need to get started is: A household bin, a balloon, tape, a CD, scissors, a smoke machine, smoke machine fluid, a toilet roll tube and plastic sheeting.
You will also need a Stanley Knife to cut a hole in the bin and a lighter to ignite a tea light. Please leave these two tasks for a responsible adult to carry out (we don't want anyone getting hurt).
1. Neatly tape a toilet roll tube around the hole on your CD
2. Cut off the narrow/thin part of the balloon with a pair of scissors
3. Stretch wider remaining part of the balloon over the top of your toilet roll tube.
4. Get an adult to light your tea candle
5. Stand 2 feet away from the tea light and point the hole on your CD towards the tea light
6. Gently tap on the balloon 2 feet away from your candle and the smoke rings will extinguish the flame.(Note these rings will be invisible until we use our smoke machine)
7. Pour 250ml of smoke machine fluid into your smoke machine
8. Spray a small amount of fog inside the toilet roll tube
9. Tap the balloon end of your mini smoke cannon and this time you will clearly see the smoke rings.
But what if you want to make a bigger and better vortex cannon?
1. Find an adult to cut a 30cm hole in the bottom your household bin (if you aren't one yourself that is)
2. Remove the lid from the bin and cover the top with your plastic sheeting
3. Fill the bin with a big blast of smoke through the hole you made
4. Find a target to aim at when firing your larger vortex cannon
5. Now tap on the plastic sheeting and you will create huge smoke rings that will leave you in awe.
