On The Scene: A Philippine woman spared execution in Indonesia on charges of drug trafficking in 2015 will be transferred home in response to Manila’s request for pardon, Indonesian Chief Minister for Law and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra said on Wednesday (November 20). Mary Jane Veloso, a domestic helper and mother of two, was arrested in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, for carrying 2.6 kg (5.73 pounds) of heroin hidden in her suitcase in 2010. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. meanwhile on Thursday said the government needed to study calls on granting clemency to Mary Jane Veloso, the Filipina sentenced to death in Indonesia who would be handed soon to Manila following years of negotiations. The mother-of-two's case sparked an uproar in the Philippines, with her family and supporters saying she was innocent and had been set up by an international drug syndicate.
