Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary. Croatia (2010).
A unique project in the world situated on the border with a National Park Sjeverni (North) Velebit. It all started accidentally when the local person from the village of Kuterevo found an abandoned baby bear in the woods. In 2002 the sanctuary was formed to house all future baby bears either left by their mothers, suffering from various injuries whether during hunting season or by illegal poaching, etc. Being left to survive on their own in the wilderness wouldn't stand a chance. The sanctuary has three settlements of which the first one is only for the baby bears between 2-6 months while the rest is allocated for the older bears. Every summer volunteers from all over the world come to maintain and help the project. If you would like to become one of them please contact www.vcz.hr. All visitors are welcome from springtime (Easter) until late autumn to visit and enjoy this very special place which every year is visited by more than 10.000 people.
