Olympic medalists are a rarity in Indian sport. For more than half a century the fortunes of India at the Olympics revolved around the Men's Hockey team. Through grit and determination, Leander Paes showed that an individual medal could be won as he stood on the podium at Atlanta in 1996. Paes was a pioneer who opened the door and 12 years later Abhinav Bindra shattered the cynicism once and for all by winning Gold in Shooting at Beijing.
