Purchasing an SAT prep course as a beginner could be challenging. In this video, I compare the SAT courses from 2 popular providers PrepScholar and Prep Expert to help you identify which course is best for your student.
Both courses offer self-paced, structured live classes, and personalized tutoring SAT prep packages.
However, PrepScholar's SAT lessons are customized to each student's strengths, in the sense that they utilize an adaptive learning algorithm to make lesson recommendations for your student, while Prep Expert's SAT course lessons are one-size-fits-all.
The depth of PrepScholar's SAT lesson content is pretty good, as they cover general concepts tested in the SAT as well as test-taking strategies.
On the other hand, Prep Expert, while covering general concepts tested on the SAT, provides a better depth of SAT-specific test-taking strategies than PrepScholar.
In the area of practice tests, PrepScholar offers more SAT practice material, but none of its own full-length SAT practice tests. They also provide detailed video and text-based answer explanations for all their SAT practice material.
While Prep Expert does not offer any practice material of their own, instead they use 11 full-length SAT practice tests from the College Board as their practice material.
In addition, they only provide detailed video answer explanations to six out of the 11 full-length official SAT practice tests that they reference on their platform.
In terms of pricing, at the time of our review, PrepScholar’s self-paced SAT course is cheaper than Prep Expert’s self-paced course.
But when it comes to live SAT classes, Prep Expert’s live SAT classes are cheaper than those of PrepScholar.
In the area of student support, both courses lack on-demand access to an instructor outside of live classes, but Prep Expert offers weekly office hours for every use, while PrepScholar does not.
Furthermore, PrepScholar caps their class size at 12 students, while Prep Expert's live classes are larger.
As for customer policies, PrepScholar offers a 5-day risk-free trial, while Prep Expert offers no free trials. In addition, Prep Expert offers the higher SAT score increase guarantee at +200 points for their live courses, and a +10 point score increase on their self-paced SAT course.
In contrast PrepScholar offers a +160 point score increase guarantee on all of their SAT prep packages.
Overall, PrepScholar is the best choice for self-paced SAT prep, and Prep Expert is the recommended choice for value when it comes to SAT prep via live online classes.
