A radical Khalistan preacher named Amritpal Singh, who had been evading arrest for over a month, was finally captured by the Punjab Police in Moga's Rode village. Singh was apprehended as he came out of a gurdwara in traditional attire, which included a sheathed sword. The preacher had become a challenge for the country's security apparatus, as he and his supporters had stormed a police station last month, raising fears of a resurgence of the militancy that had once plagued Punjab.
Singh was detained under the National Security Act and flown by a special flight from Bhatinda air force station to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam, which is known for its high-security facilities. Last year, Singh had taken over as the chief of Waris Punjab De, a group based in Bhindranwale's native village of Rode. The Punjab Police, with the help of the Amritsar police and the intelligence wing, conducted a joint operation to locate and apprehend Singh.
According to Inspector General of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill, Singh was surrounded from all sides as the police completely cordoned off the village. With his arrest, the Punjab Police hopes to prevent any further spread of radicalisation and curb any possible resurgence of militancy in the state.
